Sounds spectacular. Have fun and enjoy the beauty of Italy.

RE: Moderating vs. Policing
Sort of like a referee's job. Half the spectators will throw kisses for your call, and the other half will throw rotten eggs. You never win. But I will always support whatever you decide, sir.

RE: Tough Decision to make
I have some great horns in my collection. Each has its own characteristics that I love, but one stands out amongs them all, and that is the 1940 Olds Recording I added recently. Whatever kind of music, from classical to country, you want to play, the Olds just gets the job done. I know this sounds crazy, but it is as it plays itself and you are just along for the ride.

RE: Moderator absent...
Just went to that website and it was truly amazing. A trip there would be something you would never forget.
And as for Sicily, well I have never been there but I have an Italian penpal who spends quite a bit of time there and she has sent me many videos and pictures, especially of the Lecara Friddi municipality where she and some friends are involved in restoring the Sinatra home where Frank's father was born and raised, as well as adding a Sinatra museum and foundation. Pictures of the countryside and seaside are breathtaking.

RE: Artist on BOARD
@bigdub
Insteresting as always, Wayne.
Quite a few years ago there was a half hour tv program on the Canadian Broadcasting (CBC) network showing the starring artist doing a painting from screatch, exactly how you are doing your youtube series. It was that show that got me started on doing watercolors and my wife on pastels. I think the time is ripe for that kind of tv show again. Maybe your local station would consider you doing one. It could see a whole new batch of artists enter the art scene in your little place in the world. And if it was syndicated, well who knows what....?George

Some great and interesting discussions here by some great members. This is what I like to see at Trumpet Boards.

RE: Blasphemous takes on classic tunes
I remember the movie and wondered if I was crazy for liking it. But it was a well done movie and I actually felt sorry for Florence when she came to realize she was not the great opera singer she thought she was.

RE: Why not another thread about bigger horns ?
I don't play anything shown so far in this thread, but it is sure interesting to look at the instruments and read about them.
I tried trombone for awhile in my teens, but using the larger mp affected my trumpet embouchure so I sold the trombone. -

@Three-Sevens
Mike great to read your story. I packed up my horn in 1978, with every intention of playing again. I never thought it would take me 40 years to do so. I’m 62 and a few years away from retirement, but my kids are grown and now have some free time. I guess too much free time, a little over a year ago my wife told me I needed to get a hobby! So out came the trumpet. Since then I’ve been practicing on my own about 1 ½ hours almost every day. I’m playing in our local community band that has a great group of musicians (ages 12 to 90!). And two months ago I started taking lessons from a great trumpet teacher. I couldn’t be happier to be back on the trumpet!Looking forward to being a part of this forum.
JorgeIn my first year back at the age of 80 and after a 50 year hiatus I joined the local Horizons. Now , three years later I am playing with a larger and very busy Brass and Reed orchestra. Playing with others is really important.

I don't think my ears could handle a side B.

RE: No real gains on anything more than 40-45 minutes of practice.
I've been playing for 3 years now after a 50 year hiatus. At first I was lucky if I could play 10 minutes. It just takes time and a regular practice schedule along with playing lots of tunes. Our band has a 90 minute practice and when I first joined a month ago it was a real test of my endurance. Now the last piece we do doesn't sound that great at my end, but it just gets stronger. The one thing I do every afternoon is play songs for 60 minutes and the only rest I take is the time it takes to change the music on the stand, or take a sip of water. Work on it. Your endurance will come.

RE: Fast Tempo and old farts
@Dr-GO
Yeah, there is definitely something to that mental component thing, Doc. The one thing, though, that has kept me going during my old age comeback is a stubborn streak. I'm not a quitter and that is why I am making gains on that Sousa march. Actually I am looking forward to see how well I can do at tonight's practice. -

Original performance by the composer and his band:
Youtube VideoLast night's practice went well. The MD slowed the tempo a tad ( I'd say to about the same tempo as heard in Kehaulani's link above ). I only flubbed a couple of places early in the first third of the arrangement. I'm getting there, by golly.

@GeorgeB For things at the limit of what I can play (recently 1st trumpet in the orchestra version of Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherezade), my standard take is to completely memorize the difficult licks. Once I have freed up my eyes, they do not slow my fingers or tongue down any more!
This thing about memorizing difficult licks worked for me on Liberty Bell and now I am using it effectively for other pieces as well. Thanks for that tip, Rowuk.

RE: I really should be a better player.
@BigDub
Ha Ha... I stopped playing in 1965 and started playing again in 2016... that made it 51 years. Should have written that differently to make it clearer. -

@BigDub said in I really should be a better player.:
That trumpet in the photo.....no finger hole, no bracing, absolutely no engraved brand anywhere to be found on the Horn. Surprising I was even enthusiastic enough to continue playing since it was so difficult to get any decent sound. Of course the player didn’t help much. It was a bit of a joint effort in that sense. That Horn wouldn’t even be lamp worthy, I don’t think.
But it sure looked purdy, Wayne .

Correction on the picture I posted : when a print was made from the negative, the neg was flipped. I incorrectly look like a left handed player. This next picture was printed correctly:
